Dear Premier and Minister for Housing,

As a Brisbane resident, it has been heartbreaking to see more people pushed to the brink by this housing crisis, being forced out of homes and into tents and cars.

Premier, in March this year, you publicly committed to helping people who are sleeping rough, saying, “We will offer crisis accommodation, which in most cases involves using hotels or similar crisis accommodation … to every homeless person in the state, everyone sleeping rough”.

Minister Scanlon, in April this year, you said on ABC Radio Brisbane that ‘under no circumstance should rough sleepers would be exited from temporary accommodation back into the streets.’ You said, ‘No one should be entering into homelessness from emergency accommodation… Under no circumstance should anyone be exiting into homelessness. I want listeners to be assured of that.’

It’s clear to me the state Labor government has not been upholding these commitments.

I was encouraged by your announcement to provide more urgent accommodation – but it now seems like there are more people than ever before sleeping rough in tents and cars across our state. There are growing numbers of people sleeping in tents in places like Musgrave Park, and along the river.

We need to get people out of tents and cars as quickly as possible, but what we are hearing is that temporary crisis accommodation is insufficient. Additional funding to get people into hotels and motels is just the first step - housing support organisations also need the funding to get people into permanent homes. More funding is also needed to ensure people are provided wrap-around supports when in accommodation.

I’m urging your government to step up and stick to your word.

We call on the Labor government to:

- provide permanent and stable public / community housing to all people experiencing homelessness in Queensland;
- until the above can be secured, provide ongoing affordable (at no more than 25% of income) and safe accommodation, and;
- boost funding to sustaining tenancies support services so that no one will exit accommodation into homelessness due to a lack of support.

Given the escalating homelessness crisis, we urge you to do whatever it takes to house Queenslanders including those that are most vulnerable, honouring your public commitments.
